“We’ve lost the ability to judge when a symptom should be taken seriously.”
Many people today find themselves caught between two extremes: some go to the doctor for every little thing, while others avoid seeking medical help even when they have serious symptoms. At the same time, there is a growing sense that medicine is becoming increasingly technical: with more and more diagnostics, more and more tests, and more and more data. Dr. Marlene Heckl criticizes precisely this kind of overdiagnosis.
“There are tests that weren’t strictly necessary.”
Heckl is a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy and, through her daily work, is familiar with the structural problems of our healthcare system. And she criticizes precisely this type of overdiagnosis. In conversation with Georgiy Michailov, they discuss not only overdiagnosed diseases but also the problems inherent in our healthcare system, the limits of early detection, and the influence of AI on medicine. They also talk about how doctors can have better conversations with patients.
